dag later
See for english below
met daarbinnen de woorden HOW DID WE GET HERE?
voorbijganger begroet me met "hallo". Ik zeg "hallo" terug.
Wat doet u?
Ik
veeg haren aan de waterdruppels.
? ?
Voorzichtig
trek ik de bezem terug. Ik vraag me af
kijk om me heen.
Twee
voorbijgangers begroeten me, ik groet terug. "Wat is hier gaande?"
"Wat
denkt u aan?" "Is dit een vereniging of zo?"
"Nee,
we wachten. Daarna gaan we elk weer onze eigen weg.
Achtergrond:
titel, attributen, materialen en het performen.
De titel: How did I get here
(nummer van the Talking Heads, album: Once in a lifetime)
De
tekst HOW DID WE GET HERE? geschreven op het schort,
vraagt aandacht voor de huidige crises situatie.
WHAT
ARE WE DOING?
Het
gaat over gewaarwording.
herstellers, zorgers, bewust makers
wil bestuurbaar? Wat wil de performer? Wat wil een mens?
Performen
Soms
lukt het soms niet.

Performance
in public space, by: Ellen Rodenberg
How did I get
Here
My experiences of the 60 minutes performance, described the following day:
I take two
rolls of chicken mesh,
some branches and
a broom out of the wheeled bag and put on an apron.
The white apron
is painted with black ants; in the centre are envelope-shaped lines
containing the
words HOW DID WE GET HERE?
I unroll the
netting and shape it into a sort of unruly cloud.
I push the
branches through the mesh of the netting pieces
With a broom, I
push the hexagonal netting out in front of me.
The netting
scrapes across the paving stones of the square. A scratching sound.
I push the pieces
towards each other. They interlock. With the broom,
I try to lift
the constructed piece into the air and hold it there for a moment.
Someone walks
by with a leaky boot, leaving a trail of droplets behind.
I slowly lower
the broom, with the mesh and branches, back to the ground.
I pull the
broom out of the mesh and start sweeping the fallen water droplets apart.
A passer-by
greets me with “hello”. I say “hello” back. What are you doing?
I’m sweeping
hairs off the water droplets.
?? I point to the
hair-swept droplets and say, “I think that’s lovely”.
“Oh, now I
see”. The woman walks a short way alongside me, looking on as I sweep.
As I sweep, I
come across the chicken mesh with woven-in branches again and,
moving slowly,
sweep the whole thing towards a lamppost,
lift it up
there and keep moving it until I feel it catch on a small protrusion.
Carefully, I
pull the broom back.
I wonder why
I’m doing this and take the netting off the lamppost again.
I lean on the broom,
with the netting hanging around it like a sort of large cloud.
I look around
me.
Two passers-by
greet me; I respond. “What’s going on here?”
“What do you
think?”
“Is this a club
or something?” “No, we’re here because of the equinox;
everyone reacts
to it in their own way.”
“How should I interpret this?” “How do you see
it?”
“Something to
do with nature and pollution? But what is it?”
The
conversation continues for a moment, then the questioners take their leave.
I leave the large
metal mesh cloud where it is and sweep a small patch in front of me.
I hear a voice
listing the names of countries, and after every name I see
and hear a pan
lid opening and closing.
“Clink” country
name “clink”.
I look at the
mesh. The sun casts a sharp shadow.
The mesh shadow
contrasts sharply on the stones.
Suddenly, I am
reminded of the shapes of countries on a map.
I try to move
the broom so that the shadow of the mesh
takes on the
outline of the country (on a map) being named.
I hear the name
Suriname and picture it as angular and round;
Sweden as
elongated; with Thailand, I’m not sure.
I sweep and
walk on and come across someone tapping
an upside-down
metal bowl with a twig.
I cast the
shadow of my mesh over the bowl;
we both watch, we wait. Then we each go our different ways.
About the
title, the props and the performance:
My
preparations:
Bacground:
title, materials, performing:
How did I get
here
I took this title
of a song by the Talking Heads, from the album: Once in a Lifetime
The text ‘HOW
DID WE GET HERE?’ on the apron draws attention to the current crisis.
WHAT ARE WE
DOING?
Is is all about awaremess.
Isn’t it?
The apron with
the envelope, text and ants represents the task facing those who clean up,
repair, care
for, raise awareness and administer justice regarding what has been caused
(such as
disasters resulting from the climate crisis and
abuses of
power).
The ants refer to
the strength of numbers through cooperation.
Ants work
together to care for, feed and defend their nest.
Meanwhile, they
aerate the soil,
distribute food
and live in symbiosis with other organisms.
The hexagonal
metal chicken wire, the broom and branches
represent the
bulldozer-like brutality employed by those responsible
(for
destruction caused by greed and abuse of power), and the branches (bones)
entangled in
the wire I see as nature in distress
(who causes what? And what causes something for whom?)
I see the
chicken wire as the global network of interconnected systems,
structures,
transformed by interacting forces.
The performer
plays a role in a play in which the unknown, the unpredictable can be expressed
Is control
possible?
Is the will
controllable? What does the performer show?
Performing in
public space means form me bringing a different (my own) voice among other
voices.
